Homemade Humming Bird Food

Making homemade humming bird food is a really inexpensive way of providing your hovering friends with an additional energy boats. It is not only less expensive than the stuff from the store; you will also have full control over the ingredients and preparation process.

To make homemade humming bird food, you only need tap water and some ordinary white sugar - sucrose. Natural nectars can be made up by several different types of sugar, such as fructose, glucose and sucrose. As far as science know, there is however no need to mix sucrose (white sugar) with fructose and glucose in the homemade humming bird food.

Sucrose is actually the most frequently occurring sugar form in nectar produced by plants which rely on Hummingbirds as their main pollinators. Never add fruit to your homemade humming bird food in an effort to give the Hummingbirds some fructose, since fruit will cause the homemade humming bird food to ferment and go bad really quickly, especially in high temperatures. The same thing is true for honey, jam, jelly and similar products.

Some people have noted that the Humming birds in their garden seem to prefer white sugar made from canes compared to white sugar made from beets, and that some Humming birds refrains from eating beet sugar all together. This is however only scattered anecdotal suggestions and no studies have confirmed or falsified the theory. If your Hummingbirds dislike your homemade humming bird food, you can always test the idea yourself and use sugar that is clearly labelled as cane sugar instead of beet sugar.

Some recipes state that raw sugar should be used instead of white sugar in homemade humming bird food. There is however no evidence supporting the idea that raw sugar is better than white sugar for the Humming bird. If you live in the United States, you will not even be able to purchase real raw sugar for your homemade humming bird food because selling real raw sugar is prohibited. Raw sugar can sometimes contain mould, bacteria, insect parts, heavy metals and other impurities. The so-called raw sugar sometimes sold in U.S. shops is instead a form of sugar called “turbinado”. Turbinado is refined using the same process as white sugar; the only difference is that in white sugar all the molasses and other non-sugar parts have been removed. The iron content in turbinado can be up to five times higher than in white sugar. This is a good thing for humans, but the tiny Hummingbirds can develop iron poisoning if you include turbinado in your homemade humming bird food. Using white sugar for your homemade humming bird food is therefore a safer solution.

Red dye is not necessary in homemade humming bird food. In the wild, Humming birds do not drink red nectar; they drink clear nectar from colourful flowers. Using a red humming bird feeder will therefore typically be enough to make the Humming birds realise that food is to be found inside. Certain forms of red dye have also been suspected to cause tumours in Humming birds, but this has not been confirmed. In the mean time, a good rule regarding homemade humming bird food is never to add anything that is not absolutely necessary. You never know how the Humming birds will react to dyes, preservatives etcetera.
